Sheila Moeschen

Sheila Moeschen is a Boston-based “wordnerd” and photography enthusiast who writes creative non-fiction about gender, pop-culture, and history. She holds a PhD in Theatre Studies from Northwestern University and has taught at the college level before embarking on an adventure in the world of nonprofit work—an odyssey littered with unsung heroes, tireless cheerleaders, and many tote bags. Currently, Sheila is a freelance writer who also pursues her covert rock star dreams by doing PR work for Milwaukee-based guitarist Willy Porter/Weasel Records.

Her forthcoming book, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARILY FUNNY WOMEN, an illustrated gift book featuring 50 funny women whose lives, careers, and unique approaches to comedy moved American culture—and women’s empowerment—forward in new ways will be published by Running Press in April 2019.

Sheila’s first book, Acts of Conspicuous Compassion: Performance Culture and American Charity Practices was published by University of Michigan Press in 2012. Her work has appeared in academic and literary journals such as Comparative Drama and Niche Magazine. She is a regular contributor for Huffington Post as well as for sites such as MariaShriver.com, RYOT, and the girl empowerment organization/site, I AM THAT GIRL. She got her public radio geek-on as a guest on the NPR syndicated show “Back Story with the History Guys” and on “Radio 360” where she was asked to talk about the historical and cultural significance of Steve Martin’s 1979 album, Wild and Crazy Guy, selected by the Library of Congress for national preservation. The other guests on that segment included comedy legends Dan Ackroyd and Steve Martin, who taped their interviews separately, but can now brag they were on a “Radio 360” piece with Sheila Moeschen.
