Originally from New Mexico, Latino illustrator Alexander Vidal studied anthropology, taught elementary school, and worked as a wildlife education specialist at the Los Angeles Zoo before art school. Travel, exploration, and a love of animals and wild spaces continue to drive the themes of his artwork. He is visually inspired by folk art, Midcentury design and California Modernism. While he is new to children’s books, Alexander has illustrated for many commercial clients, including Adidas, Yosemite Conservancy, The Wildlife Conservation Society, Smithsonian Magazine, and California Academy of Sciences.

Alexander’s author-illustrator debut, Wilds of the United States: The Animal’s Survival Field Guide  released in 2022, followed by The Secret Life of Bugs, written by Emmanuelle Figueras, both from Chronicle Books. He is the illustrator of The Bone Wars: The True Story of an Epic Battle to Find Dinosaur Fossils by Jane Kurtz, Just You and Me by Jennifer Ward, and Cougar Crossing: How Hollywood’s Celebrity Cougar Helped Build A Bridge for Wildlife by Meeg Pincus which was awarded the 2022 Cook Prize Gold Medal by Bank Street College of Education (all Beach Lane Books).
